I know what you’re thinking…Taq what does my menstrual cycle have to do with my Life goals and intentions? All I want is for it to go away or for me to not have to deal with it.  I also am kind of terrified of learning more in case there is something wrong with my period or wrong with me. 

Believe me, I went through the same thing during my own journey of menstrual health. It all started when I went to therapy for the first time. 

I was in the second year of completing my Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia on decolonial theory and on the outside seemed like I had my life together.  On the inside,17 years of living in a fairly violent home + 7 years of being on the birth control pill (a.k.a not ovulating)  = A Shitshow. 

My period was a mess, I had no sex drive, I was crying and depressed all the time, and felt so nauseous and like I was going to pass out every time I started a new packet of the pill.

From 2018 onwards, I directed my research towards learning everything on menstrual cycles, decolonization, and mental health I could find written in English.  I also learned that the Punjabi word is Mahwari (you’ll read and hear me say ‘mahwari cycles’ A LOT).  The Instagram account and blog for @imwithperiods was born.

Because I went through my own journey, I know that your attempts to “fix” your period and cycle are not your fault. Here’s why:

  • Society doesn’t equip women with the knowledge of periods and menstrual cycles

  • The majority of doctors pretty much only know as much to prescribe you the birth control pill

  • Periods and menstrual cycles are usually not celebrated, in fact sometimes they are seen as taboo or as something to be hidden away and not talked about
